JOB TITLE: Economic Analyst
POSITION TYPE: One-year full-time contract, with potential for renewal.
LOCATION: Ottawa, Ontario (remote work possible)
LANGUAGE: Excellence in English or French required – written, oral, and comprehension. Bilingualism is considered a strong asset.
SALARY RANGE: $62,900 to $70,250 per year, dependent on experience.
BENEFITS: 3 weeks of vacation, plus an office closure between Christmas and New Year, and up to 10 sick days per year. Comprehensive medical and dental benefits are offered.

About the Organization
The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society(www.cpaws.org) is a national charitable organization with 13 chapters across Canada, almost 100 staff, and hundreds of volunteers who have helped to protect over half a million square kilometers of Canada’s public land and water, since 1963.
Our conservation vision is to protect at least half of Canada’s public land and water in a framework of reconciliation – for the benefit of both wildlife and humans.
CPAWS National is based on the unceded and unsurrendered lands of the Anishinabe Algonquin Nation and works in both unceded and treaty lands of First Nations, Métis and Inuit throughout the country known as Canada.

About the Role
CPAWS is hiring an Economic Analyst to join our national conservation team. In this role, you will use your skills and experience to assess the economic benefits of marine and terrestrial protected areas on a national and local level, helping us to communicate the connections between and value of conservation to the economy.
The role will involve finding, collating, and analyzing data to provide actionable insights that inform our campaigns and strategies. We are seeking someone who is also comfortable simplifying complex information and using it to tell a compelling narrative. It will involve creative thinking and bringing together data from a variety of sources to support the goals of the CPAWS strategic plan.

This is an ideal role for someone who wants to use their background in economics in a meaningful way, contributing to our efforts to protect nature in Canada.
This position will report to the Program Manager for Land & Freshwater but will equally support the work of the ocean program.
Responsibilities:
1. Economic Analysis (65%)
A. Conduct economic research and analysis related to protected areas, Indigenous-led conservation initiatives (including IPCA’s), the impact of nature-based solutions on climate change mitigation, and biodiversity loss.
B. Assess and evaluate the economic values of conservation at national, regional and site-specific scales across Canada, including the cost of inaction (avoided cost).
C. Prepare reports, presentations, and policy briefs to communicate findings to stakeholders, government agencies, and the public.
D. Monitor economic policies and trends to identify opportunities for innovative funding mechanisms.
E. Identify and articulate CPAWS economic research needs for studies by external consultants, including academics and other economic experts.
F. Collaborate with other national office staff on common projects and work to assist with these as needed.
G. Support CPAWS Chapters with economic analysis as needed.
2. Public Affairs (20%)
A. Support CPAWS National office’s government relations work, including our work to protect 30% of Canada by 2030.
B. Work with other conservation, communications & government relations staff across the organization, including providing strategic advice and support for chapter level government relations activities.
C. Represent CPAWS at multistakeholder advisory committees, consultation tables, and working groups.
D. Represent CPAWS in strategic conservation partnerships related to the protection of ocean, land and freshwater in Canada.
3. Funding Support (5%)
A. Support fundraising for your program, working with other members of the conservation team to identify prospective funders and prepare applications.
B. Provide updates to the National Board of Trustees, major donors, monthly donors and others on work and successes as needed.
4. Other duties (10%)
A. Participate in annual conservation planning meetings.

B. Participate in staff meetings, retreats, and events.
C. Engage with internal processes (e.g. working groups) and training.
Qualifications and Expectations
Essential Assets
• Legally eligible to work in Canada.
• A Bachelor’s degree or significant coursework in Economics, Environmental/Ecological Economics, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
• Experience designing, leading, and/or meaningfully contributing to and reporting on economic analysis of natural systems, including one or more of: ecosystem service valuation, environmental impact assessment, natural asset inventories, cost/benefit analyses, direct and indirect economic benefits of nature conservation.
• Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, Stata, Python) for data analysis.
• Strong quantitative skills with an ability to interpret complex economic data and it’s relationship to natural systems.
• Knowledge of environmental economics, ecosystem services, and natural resource management.
• Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
• A genuine interest in environmental conservation and sustainability.
• The ability to present complex information in understandable ways for the public and decision makers.
You may have
• Experience engaging with elected officials, bureaucrats, and other decision makers.
• Experience working or volunteering in non-profit/ charitable sector.
• Experience working to create change in other ways (e.g. social justice, housing. If your experience is outside our sector, please explain its relevance in your cover letter).
• An understanding of concepts like Ethical Space and experience working with Indigenous Peoples and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
• Fluency in English and French.
